biennial award

The BIA Record Book Committee established the Biennial Award to recognize the best trophies taken during subsequent two year periods.  The Biennial Award will be given to the three (3) largest trophies of each species (including non-typical categories) taken and entered into the program.

A "biennial" period begins on July 1 and ends two years later on June 30.  The first period for this award was July 1, 1975 through June 30, 1977.  Trophy's may only compete for a Biennial award for the biennial (two year) period in which they were taken.  To be considered for an award, the trophy must be entered into the program prior to the time that BIA orders the awards and presents them to the winners, which is normally the end of the calendar year following the periods end date.

The Committee recognized that a variety of factors can and does affect antler, horn and skull growth.  Uncontrollable climate variations which affect the range conditions and available food each year is an important factor in the size of trophies living in the forest or desert in a given year.  Hunting pressure varies with management philosophies and practices.  Harvesting a high percentage of the most mature males, whether by design or accident, reduces the size of trophies in subsequent years.  Along with these factors, and other variables,  trophy quality is impacted each year.

To document these variations, the Biennial Award was established.  As time passes and the list of biennial periods lengthens, a more accurate determination of the impact of these variables can be made.  In a sense, these awards given to the three largest trophies within each species represent the "State Records" taken during each period.  Hopefully, the Biennial Awards will also verify that the "good old days"  are still here if a hunter is willing to work for a specific goal.

Those hunters who are fortunate enough to collect one of the three largest trophies during each period, and who enter their trophy into the program, will be eligible for the Biennial Award.
